Something rotten in New York City

I don't read the New York Post but today at a newsstand I saw the attached front cover attacking Hillary Clinton with the headline "PANTSUIT ON FIRE: 57% in new poll say Hill's a liar".

This is not journalism.  This is a flat out superduper PAC masquerading as a newspaper.

And if one googles "New York Post Hillary" or "New York Daily News Hillary" one gets the same story of persistent negative coverage of Mrs. Clinton.

Something extremely rotten is going on.

In my view nothing short of subversion of American standards of civility and decency and respect for the truth.  Abuse of the news media and the public by powerful interests.  It's one thing for a newspaper to express a reasoned explanation of preference for a particular candidate in editorials prior to election day.  It's quite another to attack someone who is not even a nominee, 17 months before election day, through parsing their answers to hostile questions and misrepresenting them as "lies".

In collaboration with a disgustingly complaisant mainstream media, Republicans have developed an extraordinarily muscular capacity to make tiny molehills into towering mountains, a talent that Democrats have failed to master.

A particularly disgraceful misuse of the news media was Benghazi.  Here was an unfortunate but minor incident following the overthrow of a regime we did not like at the cost of nearly zero American casualties.  A few Americans killed and congressional  Republicans are yelling, after thousands of American deaths in Iraq ? This was a very inexpensive victory, in terms of costs to the United States.  But the mainstream news media allowed the Republican soap bubble machine to turn the overthrow of Muammar Ghadafy into a failure.

Another misuse has been coverage of the Affordable Care Act, where negative outcomes have been  given much more space than have positive.

Democrats need to start yelling about conservative bias in the news media.
