In the context of the comment section of a diary, I would like to suggest a change that would require nearly zero programming effort, but that would sharply reduce instances where a comment intended as a reply to another comment is wrongly placed on the main thread of replies to the diary.
Namely. in the message box at the bottom of the visible page, whose intention is to contain replies to the original diary (and not to any subsequent comment), revise the current "Leave a comment" text to read something like
"Click HERE to leave a comment on the main article... "
"To reply to a comment click "Reply" beneath the comment to which you wish to reply"
CONCLUSION: I can't see any downside to the suggestion outlined above. On the upside it would help to ensure that replies to a comment go in the right place, and not in the main thread.
