The duty of the FBI is to investigate, and not to inject itself into politics, but FBI Director James Comey has interfered with an election on two occasions.
First, this summer, Mr. Comey took it upon himself to strongly criticize a Democratic presidential candidate.
Second, 11 days before an election, he has damaged not only the election chances of the same Democratic candidate for the presidency, but also the chances of Democrats to be elected to the House and Senate.
President Obama is no doubt contemplating what to do about the situation. My own thought is that he should say two things.
First, that the so called “email scandal” has been magnified out of all proportion by Republicans in Congress — Colin Powell and Condi Rice handled emails in a similar manner, and there was no significant danger to national security.
Second, to say something like “Clearly Mr. Comey’s mind has become imbalanced, as he thinks he is entitled to make public statements that obviously influence who gets elected. I am not going to fire him, but I do think he should do two things. Number one, he should apologize for his blatant misconduct, admitting he acted inappropriately in criticizing Secretary Clinton in the summer, and even more inappropriately in telling the country that he was doing further investigation of emails, 11 days before an election. Number two, the second thing I think he should do, he should then resign and seek psychiatric help.”
